Passion is in Fashion

In the "Laughing Your Way to Extraordinary Employee Engagement" webinar I recently co-hosted with the fabulous folks at Jostle, I polled participants with the following question: "What is most important to you as a motivational force: passion, purpose, progress, pride, or play?".  The number one answer, at 48%, was passion.

Gary Hamel, author of The Future of Management, also believes passion is one of the keys to success. Hamel suggests that when it comes to value creation in the workplace, the relative contribution of different capabilities might look something like: passion 35%, creativity 25%, initiative 20%, intellect 15% and diligence 5%.

Yet in many ways, passion is probably the most difficult trait to measure or define. You might even wonder what, if anything, can be done to up the passion factor in your workplace. As a starting point, here are a few questions you might want to passionately ponder:
  • How would you rate the overall level of passion in your workplace?
  • How would you rate your own level of passion at work?
  • What's getting in the way of people's passions?
  • Are you communicating with passion?
  • Do you say "yes" more often than you say "no"?
  • Do you know what your colleagues top 2 or 3 passions are, both inside and outside of work?
  • Can you tap into your personal passions and make use of them in your workplace?
  • Do you have the chance to work on something at least once or twice a week that you are truly passionate about?
  • What are you doing to actively demonstrate your passion at work?

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

This Friday, August 9, is official Polka Dot Day, so there's a rather easy offbeat theme day you can celebrate in your workplace sometime, if not this Friday. Have everyone wear something with polka dots on it, whether it's their underwear, tie, socks, dress or a shirt. Award a prize for the most polka-dotted employee (or customer) of the day. You could even turn it into a fundraising event and donate "x" amount of money per total dots counted that day to your organization's charity of choice.

"Passion can make people do stupid things, but it's also the secret sauce that turns intent into accomplishment."  Gary Hamel, The Future of Management

    It's a Wacky World

A hotel in Vienna, Austria is searching for a modern day court jester. The applicant must be musical, creative, extroverted and imaginative. Job applicants are encouraged to wear creative costumes and play their musical instrument of choice during the interview. The hotel jester's role will be to treat guests like royalty and, of course, to bring a little fun and magic into their day.
