Trivial Humor

On a lighter note this week, some random humor-related trivia to ponder as your flex your funny bone:
  • According to a Robert Half International survey, 91% of executives agree that a sense of humor is important for career advancement; 84% believed that people with a good sense of humor do a better job
  • A Bell Leadership study revealed that the two most desirable traits in a leader were a strong work ethic and a healthy sense of humor.
  • Women tend to laugh more than men.
  • 89% of people surveyed said they had an above average sense of humor.
  • The very first television show featuring a laugh track with canned laughter was used on September 9, 1950 on the Hank McCune Show.
  • Timing in comedy really is everything: According to results from a "Laugh Lab" study (a serious scientific undertaking by Dr. Richard Wiseman) people find jokes the funniest at 6:03 p.m.
  • Also according to the Laugh Lab, animal jokes that use ducks get the biggest laughs.
  • Words that include "k" and hard "g" sounds are supposed to be funnier. So if you're delivering a humorous line or joke always go with "muck" never "mud".
  • People are more likely to laugh at jokes when the weather is warm and sunny.
  • In any given week, 35% of people have been tickled; the three most effective tickle locations being the armpit, waist and ribs (I would have said the bedroom, but that's just me).
  • Humans may not be the only animal that laughs: rats have been shown to emit an ultrasonic sound that researchers believe may be the equivalent of rat laughter, while gorillas appear to chuckle when they tickle each other.
  • People find jokes funnier near the middle of the month (particularly at 6:03 p.m.).
  • The funniest jokes have an average word count of one hundred and three words.
  • In personal ads, women tend to seek men who have a good sense of humor, while men tend to search for women who will laugh at their stupid jokes.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

It's Administrative Professionals' Day today (also known as Secretaries or Admin Day). Sorry if this is short notice for you, but for goodness sakes it's been around since 1952 so you've had some time to plan. But of course it's never to late to do something kind or fun for these often unsung heroes at work who, as most of us know, really run the ship.

And tomorrow is Hug a Plumber Day and Hairstylist Appreciation Day, so it's a good week to think about the people in your organization or life who may not be getting the recognition they deserve.

    Quote of the Week

"What is a sense of humor?....a resident feeling of one's own absurdity. It is the ability to understand a joke - and that the joke is oneself." Clifton Fadiman

    It's a Wacky World

Belgium has started to sell chocolate-scented and chocolate-flavored stamps to celebrate their love of chocolates, which I think is an awesome idea, and really ought to be copied by other nations. Think about it: British bangers n' mash stamps, American apple pie stamps and of course, Canadian back bacon stamps. Okay, so maybe we'll start with the maple syrup ones and work our way up to bacon.
