Why Club Med is Literally Ahead of Their Time |
I'm still surveying the rising sea levels here in beautiful Turks and Caicos, where we had the pleasure of watching not one, but two sets of firework displays from the beach on New Year's Eve. Why two, you might ask? Well, I'm going to tell you. The first round was launched by the Club Med resort at 11:00 p.m. EST, or midnight CMT (Club Med Time). You see, Club Med doesn't observe daylight savings time, so they are one hour ahead of everyone else on the island, hence the one hour-early pyrotechnical show.
Now how cool is it that Club Med doesn't observe daylight savings time? I'll tell you how cool. It's darn cool. It reflects their fun brand, it makes them stand out from the herd (at least by one hour) and it's a unique service to their guests - not observing daylight savings time gives all their guests one extra hour of daylight in the afternoon when they most need it (there are not too many early risers at a Club Med resort).
So how could your organization be a little audacious (and let's face it, acting like your own country and ignoring daylight savings time is a fairly audacious thing to do) and break a rule or convention in a fun way to stand out from the herd? |

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
Before 2012 becomes a distant memory, put up a giant whiteboard or sheet of paper or set up a video camera where everyone can post or express their top work highlights from 2012. It could be as simple as a single word that best captures the essence of 2012, a sales target they reached, a goal they achieved, or memories from a fun work social event. Expanding it to an entire wall and including photos, newspaper clippings and other various memorabilia from the year to create a memory wall can be a fun visual reminder of the year and of how much your team accomplished in 2012.

It's a Wacky World |
The Chatham, Ontario police department released their list of strangest 911 phone calls for the year as a reminder to the public not to waste time and valuable resources on frivolous issues. The winning call (as in, the stupidest call) went to a 20 year-old man who phoned 911 because of a dispute with his father over whether brushing your teeth regularly is a good idea or not. The police confirmed that it is indeed a good idea to brush your teeth on a regular basis, though as the report mentions, there is no word on whether they convinced the dentally-challenged man to take up flossing.
Happy Hump Day everyone! May the farce be with you, and as always we encourage you to forward this on to anyone and everyone who could benefit by putting more humor to work for more success and less stress.
