Is Your Workplace a Dream Come True?

Whoever said insurance was boring?

Well, okay, I guess most people. But just because you're in the insurance business, it doesn't mean you can't have any fun!

Calgary-based Rogers Insurance has received many accolades for its workplace culture, including recognition from Alberta Venture magazine as the best Alberta workplace in the 101 to 750 employees category for 2012. One of the keys to their success is that they value fun and they value the importance of creating a positive environment for their employees, so much so, that they are currently in the process of creating an internal "Director of Humour Resources" position.

Having just spoken at an one of their fabulous employee appreciation events, I can definitely attest to the fact that they like to have fun. As just one way to add a little heart and positive energy into their Calgary office, staff are welcome to bring their dogs to work, a practice that, according to Human Resources Manager Lindsay Mather, is welcomed by employees and clients.

Far and away their most impressive employee program is their "Dream Program": A program that allows all employees to register their dream wishes. Then, each year, four employees (one anonymously by a staff vote, one anonymously by management, and two by random draws) receive $10,000 towards achieving their dream. The company also adds $100 a year into each employee's "Dream Account," which they can withdraw money from at any time to put towards their dreams, and gives an additional 1,000 dream dollars to one randomly-selected employee.

Sounds like a dreamy workplace to me.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

There's a new dinner game called "phone-stacking" where guests pile up their various electronic gizmos, and the first person to crack and check a text message, e-mail or voice mail message pays for everyone's dinner. Heck of an idea for your next business lunch, working breakfast or staff meeting! Rather than pay for the meal, you could make the penalty something along the lines of either contributing $20 to your favorite charity, or perhaps, have the first-to-crack person dance an Irish jig or sing a Celine Dion song as a penalty.
