Leadership Lessons from Darth Vader? May the Farce Be With You!
Black humor aside, I believe we can and should learn as much from bad bosses as we do from the great ones. After all, the bosses featured in these seven movies offer great examples of what not to do as a leader. In fact, management schools should make these movies mandatory viewing.
So why not, as a fun exercise, assign your team the "homework" of watching these movies (different people can choose a different movie) and then have everyone present a list of specific ideas and thoughts around the themes "What makes a bad boss bad?" and "What are some practices and behaviors we all need to stop doing at work?" Because bad bosses may make for great Hollywood comedic fodder, but in real life there's nothing funny about working with a bad boss!

No, I didn't fall asleep in the middle of the newsletter last week. Due to some weird techno-gremlin glitch, a small percentage of readers could only read half of the Humor at Work newsletters the last two weeks - the e-zine stopped short at the quote of the week. Please accept my apology, and remember that you can read all the full back issues at the Humor at Work archives. And if this still happens to anyone please let me know as I have no way of knowing from this end! Thank you! |

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
If you have the flexibility in your workplace to grant employees the day off on their birthday (as many organizations do), consider offering the option of allowing employees the day after their birthday off, which may, especially when it's a milestone birthday, be even more appreciated than having the actual birthday off. Or at least offer the option of an early departure on the afternoon of their birthday and a late arrival the following morning. |

It's a Wacky World |
A judge from Cincinnati, Ohio ruled that a man did not have the constitutional right to bark at a police dog, leaving open the prospect that that man may be charged with teasing the dog. The man's lawyer argued that the barking man has a protected right to his free speech/bark under the U.S. First Amendment, whereas the prosecution argued that the barking should be considered "fighting words." Meanwhile, the barking man, in claiming his innocence, has stated publicly that the dog started it all.
The dog, sadly, could not be reached for comment.
