Giving Thanks for the Thanks
|
|
|
|
A friend of mine, a small business owner who does a fabulous job at constantly recognizing his contractors and often surprising them with bonus gifts, complained to me recently that an employee never thanked him after receiving a surprise bonus from him. Not even a quick "Cool, thanks!" e-mail from him. Nothing. Zippo! Nada!
So here's my simple yet important thought for the week: Are you recognizing the recognizers? As I am constantly reminding you, the number one reason people say they leave their jobs is because they felt unappreciated, while 67% of customers stop doing business with us because they feel unappreciated. That's why great organizations build a culture of continual celebration, recognition and appreciation.
And to help build positive momentum in your culture you also need to recognize the people doing the recognizing! The more employees express their heartfelt gratitude when their employer does something above and beyond for them, the more likely they are to keep doing it! Or heck, even top it next time! And that goes for everyone at every level of an organization.
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to recognize people and improve your organization at the same time is to constantly ask employees and customers for their input and ideas. Asking great questions sparks curiosity, drives the creative process and gets people emotionally engaged.
So here's a special thanks to all of you who have been so good at thanking me for the newsletters. Until this Canadian Thanksgiving only (Monday, October 8), if you get just one other person to sign up to the newsletter from the home page at Humor at Work, that new subscriber will get a free copy of the e-book "Inspiring Questions for an Inspiring Workplace," and then, as a way of paying the thanks forward, they'll be more than happy to forward the e-book on to you (unless they're not very nice people, but then why would you have even bothered to share this offer with them?). So thank-you in advance for spreading the good humor word! |

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
If you read my article Business and Teamwork Lessons from Keith Richards then you may recall that Keith had the quirky habit of naming his guitars and assigning them a personality (he played a lot of Malcolm on Satisfaction). So here's a simple idea to add a little fun and personality into your workplace to help make it rock and roll: come up with wacky, offbeat creative names, or heck, just plain old human names, for some of the workplace objects you routinely deal with: your photocopier, paper shredder, or company cars (yesterday was, after all, Name Your Car Day). I was thinking about this on a walk the other day through Canmore, when I noticed the garbage bins were numbered, and I thought, "Wouldn't it be more fun for visitors and employees if the bins had real names like Bob, Maverick, Quagmire and Waldorf?" Wouldn't it make people smile to ask why Shirley, your temperamental photocopier, is acting up again?
A twist on this idea, that some organizations have done, is to name hallways, cafeteria dishes, or even their stairwells after some of their veteran employees as a fun way to honor their outstanding service.

It's a Wacky World |

Boosting fertility rates may actually be a laughing matter.
At least it is to the two Israeli researchers who found a link between clowns and increased
fertility rates for women undergoing in vitro fertilization treatments. Yes,
accredited medical clowns (who are very popular in Israel) have been shown to
boost fertilization rates. Researchers aren't sure if the increase is linked to
a reduction in stress levels, or the big floppy red shoes.
And in unrelated wacky news, October 4th is Improve Your Office Day and Ten-Four Day, while Friday, October 5th is World Teachers Day, Diversity Day and World Smile Day! For a list of all the October theme days, cruise over to October Theme Days
