Can Humor Turn You Into a Hot Commodity in the Workplace?
You might think that I'm making this up, but a study reported in Psychology Today found that women think humor-generating men are, and I quote, "Hot, because wit signals intelligence and creativity." (Ladies, I'd invite you to take a moment and watch my Happy Guy video at www.HumoratWork.com.)
The study goes on to say that men tend to have a greater appreciation for women who laugh at their humor (probably because it makes them feel "hot").
The findings affirm what other studies suggest about the use of humor in a workplace setting: that it not only increases the individual's likability, but, when used intelligently by either gender, can boost the credibility of the person, because, again, it suggests a certain level of intelligence and creativity.
But here's the tricky part of the humor equation for men: According to brain imaging studies, women process jokes more deeply than men do, get a greater reward from smart humor, and are far more likely to reject dud jokes much faster than men. Which means, gentlemen, if you are going to impress your female colleague at work with your wit, you better keep any Three Stooges references to a minimum.

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
As a way to celebrate what people on your team have been up to during the summer, hold a "Where Am I?" contest: Have everyone post a photo of themselves in some interesting location. The photo could be from a vacation or simply an outing in your own city. The key to creating a fun contest is to find photos with an obscure landmark or two, but nothing too obvious (so no Mickey Mouse, Eiffel Tower or Statue of Liberty allowed!). Of course, you can also create a photo gallery in your meeting/lunch room, without the contest part, as a way of celebrating the summer season.

It's a Wacky World |
I thought this sort of thing only happened in Canada: a mother black bear and her three cubs broke into a cabin in northern Norway, only instead of finding three beds and three bowls of porridge, they polished off more than 100 cans of beer. Which means we may have to amend that old bear safety axiom to: Never get between a drunk mama bear and her cubs! Let's hope they slept it off and learned a valuable lesson about the dangers of over-imbibing.
