Making the Most of the Dog Days of Summer

For many people the month of August is a bit of a down time when employees are either on holidays or pretending to be on holidays by wearing their favorite tacky Hawaiian shirts to the office.

For those of you experiencing a more relaxed pace this month (don't worry, I won't tell the boss), here are seven ways to make effective use of the dog days of summer:

1. Catch up on those thank-you notes of appreciation to your customers, partners or colleagues. (Imagine the great reaction an employee would have when they return to work to find a hand written thank-you note awaiting them.)

2. Redecorate or redesign the old office space, keeping in mind that a fun, lively, creative space is a simple way to boost morale and spark creativity.

3. Start a "humor at work" team and plan some key initiatives for the fall season.

4. Start a workplace reading club to encourage people to expand their workplace/business knowledge.

5. Instead of a to-do list create a "to think" list and schedule some dedicated thinking time.

6. Instead of a to-do list, create a "to-don't" list of things you need to stop doing at work.

7. Chill out and enjoy yourself!  September will be here way faster than any of us want it to be!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Name your own personal office (or cubicle/desk/space) something grand and fun and wacky. Something that defines your character or role in your organization. Turn it into a team event by holding a contest and dole out a prize for whoever comes up with the most creative, fun name for your office.
