Move Over Penguins, It's Time for March of the Ducks

The Peabody Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee is a
Forbes Four Star, AAA Four Diamond luxury hotel known for its outstanding service and quality. But just because they're fancy schmancy doesn't mean they don't have any fun!  In fact, they are famous for a tradition that dates back more than 50 years:The Peabody Duck March. Every day at 11:00 a.m., a family of ducks are led from the roof by the official Peabody Duckmaster, down the elevator, along a red carpet past adoring fans, and into the lobby fountain, where they stay until 5:00 p.m., when the Duckmaster (and yes, that's his official job title) leads the procession back down the red carpet, up the elevator, and back to their rooftop abode.

Talk about standing out from the herd (or flock) to be heard! The Duck March has of course garnered the historic Memphis hotel oodles of free publicity over the decades and has turned the hotel into a tourist attraction. This is one of those wacky, quacky ideas that has turned into a time-honored tradition, that makes it fun for the employees of the hotel, and fun for the guests. (And hopefully for the ducks?)

This story is one of many invaluable reminders that just because your business is more "serious" or perceived as catering to a more "serious/stuffy" clientele, it sure as heck doesn't mean you can't look for creative opportunities to create some fun traditions in your workplace.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

The Orlando Peabody Hotel requires that all employees sign a pledge promising that they will not come to work grumpy! What a simple, fun idea to remind people of the importance of bringing along their best attitude to work each and every day. So try creating your own simple and lighthearted attitude pledge, or put up a giant attitude board that people must sign off on or check each day, where people are reminded to check their attitude before starting their workday.

    It's a Wacky World

Today is official Potato Chip Day, Ask a Question Day, and Pi Day. The reason, naturally, that it's Pi Day today is that it's March 14 (3.14...get it?), so be sure to celebrate the circle of life or at the very least calculate the circumference of that banana cream pie before wolfing it down.
