Maybe You Need to be Committed?

Already having trouble keeping those New Year's resolutions? Finding it easier to come up with great ideas than it is to actually implement them in the workplace? Or maybe you're a leader struggling to turn employee goals into true commitments.

Here's a summary from a study by the American Society of Training and Development that might help you turn those resolutions, ideas, and goals into real success. The following list shows the likelihood of a person achieving a task under varying conditions:

Condition/Situation:                                            Likelihood of Actually DOING It!

You HEAR a great idea                                                         10%
You CONSCIOUSLY DECIDE to adopt the idea                      25%
You decide WHEN you will do it                                             40%
You PLAN HOW you will do it                                                50%
You COMMIT to someone else to do it                                   65%
You create an ACCOUNTABILITY appointment with                 95%
the person you committed to

So, perhaps that solves a few mysteries for some of us. Such as why it is that the workplace is so often a place where ideas go to die!

The City of Calgary has started an initiative that appears to be gaining momentum. The "3 Things for Calgary" program encourages schools, community groups, workplaces and individuals to pledge to do three things, big or small, to make the city of Calgary a better place.

What a great, simple concept to apply to your workplace: encourage each department, team or individuals to publicly pledge to doing three things to make your workplace a better place. A more fun place. A more innovative place. Hold a meeting or rally where teams can share their ideas and commit to the rest of the workplace what they plan to do to make a difference in the way your workplace works.

And in other news...Starbucks has announced a new, mellower "Blonde" roast. Anticipating some inappropriate workplace humor, Starbucks has warned employees that any blonde jokes at work will warrant a written reprimand.
