Side Effects of Bad Meetings May Include Eye-Rolling, Multitasking, and Tears
The numbers are back from the meetings doctor, and it doesn't look good folks: 93% of employees have complaints about meetings; 44% dread meetings; 45% admit to making up excuses to avoid a meeting; 71% admit to multitasking during meetings; and 17% admitted to crying during or after a meeting!
And yes, some people have even quit their jobs because their meetings were sucking the life out of them!
Ouch!
And that's just the tip of the meeting iceberg. If your meetings are leaving you out in the cold (or, you
know, leaving people in tears), if you're dreading going to meetings, then I want to suggest that you are DOING THEM WRONG!
The first step is admitting you have a problem. So, when was the last time you solicited feedback on how your meetings are being managed and impacting your employees?
Here are a few ideas to consider.
1. Ask your employees what their top meeting pet peeves are so you can get some honest feedback on what needs to be improved. (In my upcoming idea-packed "You've Go To Start Meeting Like This!"virtual presentation on March 5th I'll being sharing the most frequently cited meeting pet-peeves and more importantly, how to eliminate them!)
2. Take the time to debrief and honestly critique your meetings. Try using the simple "Stop, Start, Continue" framework: What's one thing you need to start doing, stop doing, and keep doing that will make your meetings more effective?
3. Add some MOJO to your meetings, the way DBS Banks does. In
this case, the 'MO' in MOJO stands for the Meeting Owner, the person assigned to make sure the meeting objectives are clear, the right people are present, and the meeting is effectively facilitated. The 'JO' part of MOJO stands for Joyful Observer: a meeting attendee assigned with the task of critiquing the meeting and offering up some constructive feedback.
Your
meetings are way too important to leave to chance and the myriad of benefits of having more effective meetings is well worth your investment into getting them right!

Funny Business
You may have seen this story on social media or on the news: After Toronto was pummeled by a major snowstorm in late January, some city workers dressed up in inflatable T-Rex costumes while clearing the snow to help boost morale and lift spirits.
Let's hope the T-rexes survived this mini ice age!
