A Workplace Culture Built One Magical Moment at a Time

While researching my book, The Humor Advantage: Why Some Businesses are Laughing All the Way to the Bank, I had the pleasure of interviewing the enthusiastic human resources manager at Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park and public garden in beautiful Copenhagen, Denmark.

Tivoli is consistently ranked as one of the best places to work in Denmark, and here are just a few of the ways they nurture a magical workplace culture:

They place a huge emphasis on hiring, holding ten auditions a year where employees audition for 2-3 minutes in front of 70 people, including the HR department and managers, before moving onto more traditional interviews. The auditions are used to "cast" employees based on their charisma, body language, and enthusiastic attitude.
New employees are given a tour with the Tivoli historian so they understand the rich heritage they will be representing.
Leaders are given the goal of helping every employee "fall in love" with Tivoli so those employees in turn share that passion with the customers.
The CEO and every manager greets every new employee to personally welcome them to their workplace family.
Every non-front line employee, manager, and CEO greet all the first guests of the new season at the front gate.
Tivoli has several initiatives to encourage a healthy workplace, including free medical checkups, sporting events, and partnerships with local gyms.
They stress the importance of service in every aspect of their culture, including a reminder to all employees to look for opportunities to create what they call "magical moments" for their guests.

March 26th is Make Up Your Own Holiday Day!

Speaking of this, while filming the brilliantly quirky TV series Moonlighting starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd, Willis created an impromptu sort of holiday to honor one of his costars, Curtis Armstrong. The day was aptly named Curtis Day (I don't get the sense they spent a lot of time workshopping the name).

I offer up this quirky example to demonstrate just how easy it is to make up your own holiday! Okay, so you might not get the boss's permission to take the day off, but you can still have some fun holding a contest to come up with the most creative, fun, or much-needed "holiday" in your workplace and at least celebrate it over lunch. Or coffee. Or you, know, mention it in a meeting.
