Six Blindfolds That Keep Us From Changing Course

Are you, or perhaps your entire team, wearing a blindfold when it comes to dealing with change? In my book Small Moments, Big Outcomes, I write about six different metaphorical blindfolds people wear that prevent them from seeing the need to change, based on the book Reinvention: Accelerating Results in the Age of Disruption.

This is a much-needed conversation topic for your team, starting by simply asking, "Which of the following blindfolds might we be wearing and how can we remove them?"

Arrogance. Believing you know best and everyone else is a doofus (my term, not the authors).

Not acknowledging negative feedback. If you're not open to even hearing any feedback chances are you aren't going to change!

Dismissing a competitor's success. Also know as, "Yeah right, as if Uber/Netflix/Amazon could ever have a serious impact on my business" syndrome.

We know what's best for our customers... so we don't even need to ask them what they want!

Believing problems don't even exist. Ostrich, anyone?

Avoiding the unavoidable. Elephant? What elephant? I don't see any elephants in the room!

Removing blindfolds can be difficult, but keeping blindfolds on and running blindly headfirst into a brick wall can be awfully painful!

Mike's Fun at Work Tip

A fun meeting icebreaker to take for a spin: Have people pair up in pairs (which is, you know, the usual pairing off number) then they have to speed interview each other in front of the rest of the attendees. Give the pairs just one minute to ask rapid fire questions. You could give participants a list of questions or, and I prefer this for the goofy spontaneity, let them ask whatever questions they like, realizing the interviewee can always say "Hard pass!"
