Is More Humor Merited in Your Workplace?

Since we northern hemispherers are in the midst of summer, it seems like a fabulous time for a silly diversion. So here at the bustling world headquarters of Inspiring Workplaces our humor lab researchers (really, just moi) are always interested in stories around the intersection of humor and serious matters.

That's why I love the Science Creative Quarterly's annual science humor writing contest and especially love that it comes with a scientific formula to rate the humor!

Submissions include essays titled,"The Digestion System as Taught by a Plumber," "How to Brew Beer in a Coffee Maker Using Only Materials Found on a Modestly Sized Oceanic Research Vessel," and "Jokes Without Punchlines Taken from a Cellular Biology Laboratory."

Another fun aspect of the Science Creative Quarterly is their Order of Science Scouts and Exemplary Repute Above Average Physique which promotes networking and the sharing of science-related merit badges - a fabulously fun idea for any workplace or profession!

Some of the merit badges include:

I Could Tell You About My Research but Then I'd Have to Kill You;
I'm a Scientist but People Tell Me I Look Like a Celebrity;
I am a Marine Biologist but to be Honest I Freakin' Hate Dolphins;
I Have Set Things on Fire;
I Know What a Tadpole Looks Like;
Have Used a Dental Drill but Never Worked as a Dentist;
I'm Not Just a Scientist, I'm Also a Pirate; and
I'm a Scientist Who is Fundamentally Opposed to Administrative Duties.

Today, July 24, is Tell an Old Joke Day so why not try what one of my clients does and have a joke bowl in your office or at your next meeting. Everyone is encouraged to submit one short, clean joke and then everyone votes on the funniest joke and the winner wins a million dollars. Okay, you likely don't have a budget for that, but I'm confident you can think of something funny to honor the winner.
