I chanced upon an article by Matthew C. Meade highlighting some key lessons leaders wished they had learned much earlier in their careers, lessons I think are highly applicable to all of us. 

The four key lessons were: 

• Embracing discomfort is essential for growth. Learn to get comfortable getting out of your comfort zone. 
• Advocate for yourself. Don't just assume hard work will get you noticed, become an advocate for what you want in your career and know and communicate your value to others. 
• Network with people who aren't like you. 
• Never see mistakes as detours, rather view them as essential stepping stones.
