The Lasting Impact of Asking for Ideas

There are few things more motivating at work than seeing one of your ideas turned into action. Director Ron Howard described how this happened to him when he was seven years old, working as a child actor on The Andy Griffith Show. Howard has spoken about how it quietly irked him that when he would make suggestions in the first season of the show, just like the other actors, his suggestions were ignored.

But on episode two of the second season, he hesitated in a courtroom scene during rehearsal, prompting the director to ask him what was up.

Howard replied, “Well, I don’t think a kid would say that line that way.”

“Okay,” replied the director, Bob Sweeney, “What would a kid say?”

The director took Ron Howard’s rewrite of the line, prompting Andy Griffith to ask him why he was smiling from ear to ear. The fact that Ron Howard remembers that moment and that it informs his style as a leader on a movie set 60 years later, speaks volumes about the impact of having your ideas heard and implemented.

This doesn't just apply to leaders. The more everyone on your team thoughtfully listens to one another, asks for ideas and advice, and gives every idea a fair hearing, even when you can't implement the idea, the more valued and respected everyone will feel.

A Stanford University study found then when people do "alternative uses for ___" tests, participants generate more answers overall and more creative answers on tests.

So, a quick way to get everyone's brains fired up before a meeting is to have everyone brainstorm how many uses for a paper clip they can come up with in one minute. If you have a larger group, break them into teams of 3-5. It helps focus everyone in the moment, gets people laughing, and helps get participants brains revved up and raring to go.
