    Workplace Food For Thought

Happy Cook Something Bold and Pungent Day!

I'm so glad you brought up food, not just because I'm a little peckish right now, but because, well, who doesn't like food? OK, besides your 12-year-old? Anyhow...since you brought it up, here's some food for thought:
  • The types of food you eat can have an enormous impact on your mood, energy level, sleep, and even your creativity, so why not bring in a food nutritionist for a Lunch n' Learn session to speak about healthy eating habits for a healthier workplace?
  • Speaking of lunch n' learns, try holding "Munch n' Learns." These are 15-20 minute snack-sized learning sessions during coffee breaks hosted by different employees.
  • For a fun meeting, employee, or client gift, order in some customized fortune cookies with fortunes written specifically for you.
  • A quick meeting icebreaker question: "What is everyone's favorite "guilty pleasure" food?
  • Create a workplace cookbook that includes submissions from employees and their family members.
  • Use food for an alter ego superhero name game: The color of your underwear + the last food you ate = your superhero name! Yes it's Blue Salmon to the rescue! (Hmm...doesn't quite sound as powerful as I hoped)
  • As an icebreaker have people describe the place they were born by only describing the food from the area they were born and see if people can guess where their birthplace was.
  • Hold a contest where people have to pick up as many M & Ms from a bowl in one minute using only chop sticks.
  • If you want to score points on any team, be the person who brings cookies, chocolates or celery sticks to work on a regular basis! (OK, I apologize. I have no idea how celery sticks slipped in there.)

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

A law firm I spoke to last year shared a rather offbeat tradition they do. When they eat lunch at their local diner as part of their Friday tradition, each person orders for someone else at the table. Yes, people are aware of any food allergies or extreme dislikes, otherwise anything goes, and you have to eat what the person ordered for you. Now, you might be thinking that's the worse lunch ever, but they raved about how fun it is to work their way through the extensive menu and choose odd combos for people. It generates a ton of laughter and deliciously curious conversations about food!
