The Power of Celebrating Milestones |
|
|
|
Welcome to the 1,000th edition of Inspiring Workplaces!
I started this newsletter way back on May 1, 2002, working out of a small barn with only a quill pen and candle to light the way, so it's been quite the wild ride!
Given this historic occasion that your children will be talking about for decades to come, my question for you is this: What are you doing to celebrate the significant milestones in your life and your workplace? Celebrating key milestones is one of the most powerful motivators, it's a way to keep your history alive, and an opportunity to add some fun traditions into your workplace.
A few ideas to ponder...
- Use milestones as an opportunity to celebrate your business's origin story and key dates to keep your history alive.
- Brainstorm all the possible milestones you might celebrate: the anniversary date of your company's founding; anniversary dates of when employees started working with you; number of customers; key sales milestones; number of social media subscribers; orders served; packages mailed; coffee cups drank; staples stapled.... whatever creative or quirky
milestone you can track should be up for grabs!
- Use milestones as a way to thank and celebrate your employees, employees' families, partners, vendors, and customers.
- Share your milestones with the world!
So, I want to thank YOU for your ongoing support. So many of you regularly keep in touch with me and for that I am grateful. You have offered up your great ideas, challenged me at times, and sent so many amazing notes of appreciation over the years. (Waldo Berg, thank you so much for the gift of the trip to Hawaii. I mean, seriously, you shouldn't
have!)
As a small token of appreciation for the early bird readers, the first 25 of you who respond to this message and share one thing your organization does to either add more fun to your workplace or make it a better place to work, will receive a free eBook copy of The Jerk-Free Workplace: How You Can Take the Lead to Create a Happier, More Inspiring Workplace. Operators are standing by!

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
My first Fun at Work tip was one for the ages:
When you get in an elevator where there are already people on board, don't turn around, just stand facing them. I guarantee you it will make them feel so awkward they can't help but smile or laugh.

The first Funny Business featured the following fascinating statistics:
In an Ipsos survey, 25% of employees admitted to physically assaulting a photocopier. Alberta leads the pack when it comes to photocopy machine rage, with 51% of Albertans admitting to beating up a photocopier.
