If Only I Had at Least Learned From My Mistakes |

In my presentations I often share the fascinating research that reveals how Olympian bronze medalists are often much happier than the silver medalists. Given that second place is better than third place, this phenomenon is a tad
bonkers. Why this is happening is based on how the athletes are viewing the outcome. The bronze medalists are celebrating the fact that they made it onto the podium, whereas the silver medalists are thinking, "I lost out on a gold medal."
Given that I've written and spoken about this for years, I was delighted to see Daniel Pink dive deeply into this topic in his latest book, The Power of Regret. I love how Pink has framed these two different mindsets: the "at leasts" vs. "if onlys." The bronze medalists are thinking, "at least I won a medal and made it onto the podium," whereas the silver
medalists are ruing that fact that "if only they had pushed a little harder they would have won gold."
Taking an "at least..." approach helps you be more grateful, resilient, and happier. It helps you focus on and appreciate the good, instead of dwelling on what went wrong.
Don't, however, beat yourself if you spend some time in the "if only" camp. As Pink points out, as long as you aren't repetitively wallowing in the "if only..." regret zone, thinking thoughtfully about your regrets can help you improve future performance and make better decisions.
Okay, bad segue alert. Thanks to all of you who placed their votes and offered fabulous suggestions for my newest book title. If only there had been a decisive winner, but, at least I've narrowed it down to two final options, so if you would do me a solid and vote again for your favorite title I'd be most curious to see the results and grateful for your support: The workplace culture book title poll - operators are

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
A Microsoft office has a ritual called the Play of the Day where someone chooses a song that gets played throughout the office at 3:00 pm and everyone is invited to dance, sing along, or, in the case of a Barry Manilow song, put on their headphones (exceptions being Copacabana and Mandy, in which case they'll obviously sing
along).
If you can't do this for your entire office, then you could do this as a meeting opening or closing ritual, where a different person each meeting chooses a song that gets people revved up for the meeting or sends them off on a high note...literally!
