Putting More Mojo Into Your Meetings

Do you need to put the mojo back into your meetings?

I love this idea from DBS banks, where they've created a company-wide mechanism to put the mojo into their meetings using a framework known as, yup, MOJO!

“MO” stands for the Meeting Owner. The Meeting Owner is the person who makes sure the objectives of the meeting are clear, the right attendees and information are present, and the discussion is effectively facilitated.

The “JO” stands for Joyful Observer, whose role is to critique the meeting and offer constructive feedback. (Notice the positive framing of the title. I suspect that Sarcastic Cynic wouldn't work quite as effectively?)

They also have a tool that allows participants to offer immediate feedback on the meeting which is shared with the meeting lead.
One of the customer service-y (it's a term, at least it is now) questions they ask meeting participants is: "Would you recommend this meeting to a colleague?"

So why not MOJO up your meetings with more mojo? And hey, here's an idea - maybe we need to invent a Mojo-Meter to measure the mojo in our meetings, workplaces, and lives?

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

When comedic actor Martin Short would get into disagreements with his wife, his wife would often shift the energy by saying, "I want to speak with Ed." The Ed she was referencing was one of Short's alter ego personalities, the adorably nerdy Ed Grimley. And of course, shifting into Ed Grimley mode did wonders to break the tension and help them refocus their discussion.

Now, you may not have a famous alter ago to rely on, but it doesn't mean you can't call for a "humor timeout" when tensions rise during a disagreement.

Call a one-minute Dad joke break. Grab a rubber chicken in the middle of your meeting table and evoke your humor emergency protocol by having everyone share a quick funny story. Use the "time out" hand gesture and get everyone up and doing their version of the happy dance for one minute. And yes, when things are heated there's a risk that this could backfire, which is why you ideally need to decide upon some humor tension-busters in advance!
