    Making Moments Matter

It's time for another lime-scented, gluten-free edition of random musings and ideas:
  • A helpful question to ask your employees and teammates to help you unearth some interesting insights: "What are you stuck on?"
  • Two habits that highly productive people engage in: They step away from ALL screens for extended periods; they block out chunks of time to work in focused intervals.
  • Even just witnessing acts of kindness releases oxytocin (the hormone that generates warm, fuzzy feelings) so imagine how good it feels to actually, you know, be kind to your fellow humans?
  • "Dumfungled" is a Scottish term for being mentally or physically worn out. Although I don't want anyone feeling this way, I truly hope that when you do feel this way, you use this word.
  • Harvard career expert Heidi K. Gardner believes the #1 red flag in problematic employees is when employees take credit for someone else's idea. So maybe don't do that?
  • A study reported in the book,The Good Life, found that when people did nothing more than make eye contact, smile, and engage in a brief social interaction with the barista at a coffee shop they felt substantially uplifted and a greater sense of belonging, as compared to people in the study who were asked to just be as efficient as possible when ordering their coffee. It's all about the moments! And imagine how much more uplifted front line employees could be if they turned this into a regular habit with every customer interaction?

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Challenge everyone on your team to bring one item into the office that could go into a collective "humor first aid kit." It could be funny photos, funny books, silly office toys, goofy hats, or kazoos: Anything that might help shake the mental cobwebs loose during a "serious emergency."  Award a prize for whoever brings the wackiest stress-reducing, fun-boosting item.

As seen on a trailhead sign for Noccalula Falls Park in Alabama:

WHY ARE YOU LITTERING?
  • I am a jerk
  • I don't care about natural areas
  • Mommy still cleans up after me
  • All of the above
