    Flying Your Flags at Meetings

Here's a simple framework you could adopt for your daily team huddles or meetings. The CEO of Dupont, Ed Breen, holds hour-long Monday morning meetings where everyone waves red or green flags as they go around the room with updates. Green flags highlight and celebrate successes; red flags are used to flag (see what I did there?) any challenges or concerns.

You need to create trust for this to work effectively though. The CEO makes it clear that the biggest no-no is to NOT wave a red flag when it is clearly warranted. Part of the entire point of the exercise, after all, is to be able to safely raise concerns so that the rest of the team can support you and help find a solution.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Rolling Stones' legend Keith Richards has a habit of naming all his guitars (he used Malcolm a lot on Satisfaction). In a similar vein, one of my clients added more fun to their workplace by coming up with names for many office fixtures that one would not normally name. From their office plants to their hallways to the photocopier (Blanche), they named as many things as they could. Some names were tied to their values, some related to a story, some names honored an important client or former employee, and some were selected by a random draw from employees' submissions.
