We All Win With More Inclusive Language

With the NHL hockey playoffs underway it's timely to consider this interesting bit of research:
When a sports team loses, their fans tend to say, "They lost," but when their team wins, fans tend to say, "We won!"  (And sadly for Edmonton Oilers' and Toronto Maple Leafs' fans, there's not too much "we" talk likely happening this week!)

Now consider if this same mindset was used in the workplace. Do you or your colleagues sometimes take credit for victories that you really had nothing to do with, and conversely use language that suggest others were to blame when things go bad or mistakes are made? (Helpful hint: this is a fabulous way to earn a reputation as a work jerk.)

Research also shows that leaders who use the pronoun "we" more often than "I" are more respected and trusted. It's simply more inclusive to use "we": It signals that you're not being a puck hog and you recognize that success always requires a team effort.

It's a simple language shift, but when we all do it (see what I did there?) we will definitely contribute to a more inclusive, team mindset.
