Five Ways to Influence People to Take Action

Happy Wednesday you fabulous humans you!

Here are five tips to help you improve your ability to positively influence people around you - yes, even Bob!

  • Wharton professor Jonah Berger, author of the book Magic Words, recommends using the word "recommend" vs. "like" to increase your ability to persuade someone. His research showed that when you recommend something, it increases the likelihood of the listener taking action by a whopping 32%.
  • Making a request of someone and adding the word "because" and then stating the reason for your request, increases compliance by 50%. (Just try not to say, "Because I told you so, that's why!")
  • A 2017 Harvard study found that asking follow-up questions have a super-sized impact in terms of making a listener feel valued and really listened to and when people feel truly listened to, they are far more likely to be amiable to your recommendations.
  • Use "we" vs. "I" language to demonstrate empathy and create a partnership approach. Using "we" when making a recommendation helps because you're showing that you're thinking of what's best for your team or company and that you aren't just focused on what's best for yourself.
  • Finally, I recommend you use humor because we know it works on several fronts (see what I did there?). Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found that creating laughter helps listeners like you more, relate to you better, remember what you are saying better, and, most importantly, laughter increases the odds that they will agree with you!

Next Tuesday, August 8, is official "Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day" so why not bring this wacky idea into your workplace and sneak some zucchini onto your neighbor's desk or into a customer's bag? Or surprise meeting attendees with a zucchini (I promise you, they'll definitely tell their friends and families about it.) It's a memorably silly way to recognize or thank someone!
