Why So Low? A Simple Way to Reframe a Bad Experience |
I'm a big fan of this ritual that some of my clients do: Every morning their teams gather into a huddle or they just have everyone stand where they are and call out how they are feeling on a scale of 1-10, using decimal points to make it
that much more fun (I mean come on, who doesn't love a good decimal point?). In video meetings, participants simply pop their answers into the chat box.
Although they encourage everyone to be honest, they do this ritual to remind everyone they have the power to hit the reset button and be intentional about their attitude and they do it to identify who might be struggling and need support from their team.
Here's a cool side story to this ritual, and you can try this out with your colleague, spouse, or child. Ask them to rate their day or any experience on a scale of 1-10. When they choose a lower number always ask them, "Oh, I'm sorry to hear. Why did you choose such a low number?"
The beauty in asking this question is that people almost always reappraise the event and revise the number upwards. The question forces them to consider that the event could have been worse, and they tend to appreciate the things that went right instead of just focusing on what went wrong.

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
Every Wednesday the San Diego-based company Red Door Interactive holds a "WE:30" huddle. At 3:30 pm every Wednesday, everyone takes a break to celebrate an employee who exemplifies one of their core values. As part of the ritual, the employee shares a story that has inspired them. The tradition keeps their values front and center and helps create a spirit of celebration and camaraderie.
