Seven Ways to Express Your Thanks to Rock It as a Teammate! |
|
|
|
If you want to be known as a dream teammate at work, then being more intentional and thoughtful about how you thank and appreciate colleagues is a fantastic way to achieve that goal.
The bonus is this: Heaps (I believe that's the technical term) of research shows that the more we appreciate and recognize our fellow humans, the happier and more grateful it makes us! A Wharton study also found that when you use the phrase "I am grateful" you are viewed as being even more thankful and the feelings of gratitude within yourself are more powerful.
Here are seven ideas that I hope you'll be grateful for.
- For key people in your life, start a file (your phone works great) to collect tidbits that you hear about them that you can later draw upon for inspiration. For example, you overhear them talk about their favorite snack indulgence, and voila, the next day their snack appears on their desk with a sticky-note thank you.
- If you know enough about their family, a small gift for their children based on their interests will always be a huge hit.
- Surprise them with something fun or quirky: You can Google random poem generators to create a customized funny poem (it's Take Your Poet to Work Day today incidentally) that you can then leave them in their voicemail.
- Keep it simple: When you're thinking about someone pick up your mobile and text them a note just to let them know you were thinking about them.
- Make it public: Write a note of thanks or appreciation on a whiteboard or bulletin board where everyone can see it.
- Use a service like Send Out Cards which makes mailing out thank you cards to remote employees or colleagues and friends in other locations SO simple. (I don't get a kickback; I just love the simplicity of what they offer!)
- Possip about them! (Possip = "positive gossip," a term I invented that I hope will one day sweep the nation). When you hear a customer or colleague say something positive about them, pass it along to them right away!

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
With so many of us taking some well-deserved vacation time this summer, why not add a little humor to your out-of-office email message? For inspiration, here are the openings to a few examples I've stumbled upon or used myself:
"The good news is I'm out of the office. The bad news is I'm out of the office."
"I am in London, so email replies may be tardy due to the curvature of the earth and the sun... and you know... science and stuff."
"I have been kidnapped by a band of stir-crazy children."
"This is Susan's computer. Susan has been overworking me lately so we both needed a break, and not just from each other!"

Ponder of the Week |
"Frozen yogurt is tastier than ice cream; nobody is too old for cartoons; chocolate is the best medicine; BIG books are better; cats secretly rule the planet; and everything should be available in the color pink, including monster trucks." Richelle D. Goodrich

As seen on a sign (that causes me to ponder so many follow up questions) seen at the entrance to a public washroom at an airport:
Closed for private event. Our apologies.
