    Creating a Culture of Compassion

A Johns Hopkins study found that giving just 40 seconds of compassion can lower another person’s anxiety in a measurable way. That's all it takes to make a difference - 40 seconds!

A fascinating article titled Leading With Compassion Has Research-Backed Benefits outlines how injecting more compassion into your workplace can make an enormous difference. The study found that the number one reason people are still leaving organizations has nothing to do with economics and everything to do with relationships: employees’ decisions to stay in a job largely come from a sense of belonging, feeling valued by their leaders, and having caring and trusting colleagues. And the most effective way to foster this type of workplace is to infuse it with genuine compassion, which the research defines as being one step beyond empathy. Compassion, the authors suggest, is empathy + action. You have to actually do something beyond just empathize with a colleague to demonstrate real compassion.

And here's the payout: great compassion at work leads to deeper relationships, happier employees, reduced burnout, higher employee retention rates, and an increased likelihood of getting promoted. There are significant links to better health, and not just for people on the receiving end: People who act compassionately without any expectation of something be returned to them, reap the health benefits and even live longer.

Compassion, as with negative emotions, is also highly contagious. So why not start a compassion epidemic in your workplace? All it takes is intention. Being present and purposeful in your interactions. Asking someone, "What can I do to support you?".

And yes, all it takes to make a difference in someone's life is 40 seconds.
