Can You Name Your Supporting Cast?

Do you know the names of everyone you work with? It's surprising how many people admit to not knowing names of colleagues that they should - perhaps it's the receptionist or security guy in the lobby that you quickly nod to each morning or that dude, you know, what's his name, the guy with the weird glasses in IT?

I mention this because I love this example of culture leadership from award-winning film director Ava DuVernay, who makes it a practice to learn every name of every single person on the crew before day one of filming.

This doesn't go unnoticed by the crew and it's not a small gesture. It's a sign of respect to the entire crew. DuVernay does it intentionally to send the message that no one is going to be treated differently, that every employee matters, and that no one, including the stars in front of the camera, is more important than anyone else.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

To add some fun energy to your meetings, pose some fun personal questions (favorite song, last meal request, dogs or cats? etc.) interspersed with fun trivia questions related to your business. But rather than have everyone go around the room and shout out their answers, instead have everyone write down their answer on a sheet of paper and hold it up at the same time. It speeds up the activity and always creates more fun energy.

    Funny Business

Well, maybe more of a "happy business" this edition. According to a study by musicologist Michael Bonshor, the happiest song of all time, based on his formula that considers the key of the song, number of beats per minute (137 beats per minute is the sweet spot), and whether there are "seventh chords" or not, is...drum roll please...yes, it's the Beach Boys 1966 smash hit Good Vibrations!
So the next time you're in need of some good vibrations...well, you know what to do.
