Betting on The Power of Outrageous Bets |
|
|
|
Making outrageous bets can be a fun way to encourage anyone to reach a goal or change a behavior. (I once had to dress up as a mountain goat at a formal party. I can't remember what the bet entailed, but obviously I lost!)
At Allbirds Shoes, the marketing team made a bet that if they hit a ridiculously high sales target by the end of the summer, the company would have to buy the team a Frose Slush machine. The marketing team now happily celebrates Frose Fridays.
Five executives at a management consulting company made a public wager that whoever got the fewest number of steps in during a fitness challenge month would have to sing a Celine Dion song in front of all the employees.
A therapist at a rehab clinic bet a patient that if they reached a goal by the end of the month he'd shave off his beard. The patient did and the beard disappeared.
A Swedish principal bet a grade nine student that if he stayed in school the entire year, he would dye his hair pink. Of course the student lasted the year, and the principal held up his end of the deal, much to the delight of all the students!
If you keep the wager friendly and do it in a spirit of fun, then why not create some outrageous bets with your clients, colleagues, employees or family members? You can use the bet to inspire new behaviors, raise money for your favorite charity, or get some free publicity!

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
According to a study quoted in an Inc. magazine article on the benefits of humor, adding a bad dad joke to a sales pitch increases customers' willingness to pay by 18 percent! So, why not add a dad joke (bonus points if it's relevant to your profession) to your sales emails, voicemails you leave for customers, on your invoices, and anywhere else it might make a difference. And since
April is official Humor Month and tomorrow is Fun at Work Day, now is the perfect time to start a dad joke file or dad joke contest to amass as many bad dad jokes as you can. Here's one to get you started: I made fish tacos today but they just swam away!
