Getting Down So You Can Stay Up

Hopefully most of you will get some down time over the next few weeks, so I urge you to embrace the "down" part of down time.

When it comes to resiliency at work and mitigating burnout, we know that what matters isn't just the amount of time of you take, but how you spend your time off. So, make sure you take time to do things that are important just for you and for your own self-care. Set realistic expectations. Establish boundaries. Practice saying 'no' so you have more time to say 'yes' to the things that really matter.

And plan to have fun! Schedule it to make sure it's a priority. Watch more funny movies. Put funny hats on your dog...or your neighbor's dog...or your cat. Okay, maybe not your cat. Bad idea. Revel in lolling about guilt-free! Take as much care recharging your batteries as you do recharging your smart phone!

Remember, the more down time you make, the more up time you'll be able to enjoy later on.

Happy holidays everyone - I wish you all a safe, joyous, fun, and re-energizing season. Thank you for sharing another crazy orbit around the earth with me!

For anyone still opening gifts this holiday season at the office or with friends or family and you want to up the fun factor: Have everyone unwrap their gifts while wearing oven mitts. Not only is it fun, it's a great reminder to appreciate the fact that we have five fingers with opposable thumbs.
