Three Reasons People Practice "Safe Silence" at Work |
|
|
|
I've written often about the numerous pitfalls of working in a workplace where employees don't feel comfortable speaking up - whether it's offering up an idea or asking a challenging question.
According to research cited in the book Courageous Cultures, there are three primary reasons why employees don't speak up and instead practice what the authors call "safe silence":
1. Risk assessment. Employees overestimate the risks associated with speaking up and underestimate the future benefits.
2. Diffusion of responsibility. Everyone just assumes someone else will speak up, so no one speaks up!
3. Over-remembering poor experiences. Negative experiences stick to our brains like Velcro, so we remember the one time it went bad and forget about the ten times it worked out great!
Which ones can you relate to? Are there other reasons stopping you or your teammates from speaking up at work? Please, as always, let me know your thoughts!

Another alter ego name game to try at your next meeting or to use on an "Alter Ego Friday." This one's your Rock Star Name, based on the name of your first pet + the model of your car. Which would make me the one and only Brandy Kona. Oh, yeah!
