Ditching Negative Talk for a More Confident Mindset

According to Kathryn and Ross Petras, the hosts of NPR's podcast You're Saying It Wrong, here are some phrases to ditch if you want to feel more positive and confident:

1. Switch from "I HAVE to do that" to "I GET to do that." Even when it's something you don't really want to do, this shifts you from an obligation mode to opportunity mode. (If you encourage your teenagers to try this, give them bonus points for doing it without any sarcasm!)

2. Instead of "Why is this happening to me?" try, "What am I learning from this?" This helps you shift from a complaining mindset to a growth mindset where you're actively looking for the good in a difficult situation.

3. Rather than "This is too complicated," shift to "I don't understand this...yet."  The first phrase sends the message that you are giving up, the second sends the signal you're willing and able to learn.

4. Rather than "I failed" say, "This attempt didn't work out." When we use the phrase "I failed" we're being far to hard on ourselves, and it's too easy to internalize the failure as a character trait and that you'll never have another opportunity.

5. Swap out "I can't do that" to "I can try to do that." Saying "I can't do that" is admitting defeat before you've even started; saying "I can try" offers you the opportunity to learn or accomplish something without setting expectations too high.
