A Lesson in How to Win the Hearts of Your Employees

Here's how you win the hearts of your employees.

If you listened to my Insights@Work podcast interview you'll have already heard this story, relayed by the host Jeff Livingston. When Jeff started working from home at the start of the pandemic, he played double duty as a home school teacher for his six-year-old daughter Sophie. He set Sophie up with a desk in his home office so he could keep an eye on her, and naturally being in such close proximity the rest of his team got to know Sophie very well during their video meetings.

One afternoon the doorbell rings and Sophie, expecting the usual FedEx delivery for her father, runs to the door and is instead surprised with a beautifully wrapped gift basket that the delivery guy announces is addressed to a "Miss Sophie." Of course this makes Sophie's day!

Sophie excitedly unwraps the gift basket revealing a
crown, a wooden toy sailboat, and a copy of the book, “Where the Wild Things Are”. The accompanying card from the CEO reads:

"Sophie, Thank you for being a member of the ADP team and helping your dad
with his work everyday! You are awesome! Happy reading, Shawna.”

Jeff shared with me how much of a young ambassador Sophie has become for her Dad's company and how the wooden toy sailboat sits behind him in his office as a reminder of the importance of recognizing family members and a reminder of what an extremely thoughtful boss he has. As Jeff relayed to me, "I would go to the ends of the earth for my boss."

And that is how it's done.

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Today is official "Laugh and Get Rich Day!" so I've got two, yes two, fun at work tips related to this theme.

Beryl Health has a "Laugh Box" in their office where people place notes describing funny bloopers or weird things that have happened, and then when someone needs a break they call for a "Moment of Laughter" and read a few excerpts from the box.

My 2nd tip is a blatant plug: Buy my book The Humor Advantage for your entire team! I mean, come on, the subtitle, "Laughing All the Way to the Bank" was seemingly made for this very day!

    Quote of the Week

"If you see me talking to myself just move along.
I’m self-employed, and we’re having a meeting.

Sarcasm at Work: Does Sarcasm Have Any Place in a Business Setting  A few people ask me to write something about the use of sarcasm at work, so I've compiled some non-sarcastic thoughts in this non-sarcastic article: Sarcasm at Work.
