The Power of Intentional Greetings and Goodbyes |
|
|
|
Are you being intentional with your greetings and your goodbyes?
A study I stumbled upon recently (I almost twisted my ankle!) suggested that saying a proper goodbye to our furry pets when we leave for work can help them feel less anxious in our absence.
Management consultant Tom Peters recently shared an interesting tidbit: In a school where a teacher greeted every student by name and with a smile at the doorway, disciplinary issues dropped by 20% and measures of academic engagement rose by 25%.
A study of medical operating teams found that when teams did nothing more than go around the group and introduce themselves, communication was improved and fewer mistakes were made.
And in the book Leading With Happiness, by Alexander Kjerulf (who I had the pleasure of interviewing many years ago in Copenhagen), Kjerulf describes working in a German bank where every morning, when any one of the 40 team members arrived at work, they would walk around the offices and give a brief and genuine personal greeting to each person, and the impact on morale and camaraderie was enormous.
What difference could it make in your workplace, if everyone, starting with you, was more intentional about giving a proper greeting and a proper goodbye?

Mike's Fun at Work Tip |
|
Set up a "question jar" in your workplace where employees can submit interesting, quirky questions. Then have people randomly select questions they have to answer during your daily team huddles, over a lunch, or at your meetings. And since people may end up drawing their own question that they wrote, it helps ensure everyone only puts questions in that they themselves would be willing to
answer.

"The number one premise of business is that it need not be boring or dull. It ought to be fun. If it's not fun, you're wasting your life." Tom Peters
