    Turn Praise Into a Habit

It's time for a pumpkin-infused edition of random musings and ideas!
  • Show your customers the value you provide: A recent library receipt indicated how much money I saved borrowing the book, how much money I saved this past year, and how much I have saved since being a library member. Very cool.
  • Thirty-one million vacation days have been left unused by Canadians according to a recent survey. Please feel free to send any spare days my way! And seriously people, use your vacation time - break before you break!
  • One of the most powerful things you can say during any workplace conversation is simply, "Tell me more...". Then, and here's the tricky part, be quiet!
  • Innovative ideas that make an enormous difference aren't always BIG ideas and they don't always involve cool gadgets: UPS saved 10 million gallons of fuel, reduced idling times and accidents, lowered the number of miles driven per route, and generated 100,000 less tons of carbon dioxide emissions simply by banning left-hand turns wherever possible.
  • Turn praise into a habit: One CEO starts every day with 10 coins in his left pocket, then as he praises an employee he shifts a coin to his right pocket, making sure all ten coins are shifted over to his other pocket before the end of each workday.
  • Speaking of recognition, today is official Thank Your Cleaners Day, so remember to thank your cleaners!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Hold a photo contest where the object of the contest is to snap a photo that best captures the day in a life of your team or company. You can either hold the contest over the course of a single day or hold it over the course of one week. The final entries could be displayed on a photo montage wall in your building or shared on your website.

    Funny Business

An "out of order" sign spotted at the bottom of an uncooperative escalator:

This escalator is refusing to escalate.
This has been escalated to the engineer who is
on his way up (or down) to check it out.
