    The Ministry of Fun

It's time for another gluten-free,100% organic edition of random ideas and musings:
  • The Admiral Group insurance company has a "Ministry of Fun" which rotates employees through on a monthly basis, so each month a different employee gets a crack at implementing ideas to make the workplace more fun and enjoyable.
  • Recognizing the enormous, multi-faceted benefits of napping, more and more businesses, from Zappos to Nike, are designating napping rooms or at least quiet rooms where employees can catch a few Z's or meditate.
  • A study co-led by the University of Pennsylvania and University of Minnesota found that friends working on group tasks outperformed acquaintances working on group tasks because they communicated better, were more encouraging, and they offered feedback more readily. Encouraging friendships at work has also been shown to improve happiness and productivity - employees aren't just letting down colleagues when their performance slips, they are letting down friends.
  • A survey of 350 brides-to-be found the #1 most admired and sought-after trait in men was...drum roll please...a sense of humor. (I'm sure you knew that already.)
  • An effective way to start a meeting where you want to encourage open dialogue and take the pulse of the group is to simply ask, "What's on your mind?"

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

One of my clients held a hybrid fashion theme day where employees wore dressy business attire on the top paired with casual "virtual-working-from-home" office attire on the bottom. They held a fashion show at lunch and awarded prizes for people who best captured the contrast between home "Zoom attire" and office attire.

    Quote of the Week
“Intelligence is traditionally viewed as the ability to think and learn yet in a turbulent world there's another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn." Adam Grant

The Power of Humor at Work
I had a fun conversation with some fabulous folks from the Association of Applied and Therapeutic Humor on the importance of humor in the workplace and humor in business. Lots of great ideas and a few laughs along the way. Listen to the podcast here: The Power of Humor at Work
