    In Praise of Checklists

No matter how experienced they are, pilots are required to go through an incredibly rigorous checklist every time they fly. (And as a frequent flyer, I am grateful that they do!)

Hospital-acquired infections dropped at hospitals in Michigan from 2.7 per 1,000 patients to virtually zero after three months once a simple five-item checklist for physicians was implemented. This was no small accomplishment - over 1,500 lives were saved in 18 months!

And a top-performing sales rep I know uses a checklist on every client call he makes to make sure he never forgets the basics and consistently offers his clients the best possible service.

Implementing checklists for different tasks you perform at work will keep you focused and consistent. If you're a leader, you can create a leadership checklist to help support your leadership goals. If you're on the front line of customer service, why not create a customer experience checklist to help you consistently wow your customers?

No matter what your job entails, a checklist can simplify your life, give you greater peace of mind, and help you excel at whatever you do!

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Create different versions of "swear jars" for your workplace as a fun way to add some levity while raising some coin for your social fund or favorite charity.

You could have a "sarcasm jar" for Bob where every time Bob says something sarcastic (as he's soooo prone to doing) he has to toss a buck in the jar. OR a complaint jar to raise money anytime someone complains (imagine the millions you could rake in!)

Or, whenever anyone says an annoying buzzword or acronym you're trying to oust from your workplace vocabulary they have to toss in a buckeroo. Or an "Anytime someone on our sales team forgets to ask for a referral or upsell a product" jar. OK, so that one would have a long title, but you get the gist!

    Quote of the Week
“A co-worker said to me, 'Could you BE more annoying?'
so the next day I brought tap shoes to work.”

    Funny Business

As a somewhat fanatical dog lover, I always appreciate it when businesses extend their customer service to dogs, like the Delta Hotel in Fredericton. On my speaking trip there last month I was happy to see a water bowl for dogs at their entrance with a sign reading: Happy Hour for Dogs!
