Humor for a Better World |
|
|
|
I was so pleased to hear that the San Fransisco's Exploratorium science museum features an exhibit on humor and sharing jokes. (Thank you to my friend Patricia Katz for sharing this fun find!)
The exhibit features a "Share a Joke" component where you can uncover jokes that you are encouraged to pass along, for example: "How do chickens communicate? By using fowl language." (Okay, so no one said they were the world's best jokes.)
The exhibit also features some solid advice when it comes to sharing humor, which I thought I'd share with you.
Joking For a Better World
Humor is a useful tool for interacting with people. Laughing together can ease tensions and build connections. But...use humor responsibly!
Make a connection. Trying your joke on a stranger? Catch the person's eye, smile, and say hello.
Stay positive. Want everyone to laugh? Use humor that doesn't make anyone cry, flinch, or fume.
Read the vibe. Some times are not right for a joke. Be aware of other people's moods.
Change it up. If your humor is bombing, try a different approach.
It's good medicine. You can use humor to relax people, cope with stresses, and address difficult topics.
It shouldn't be a power tool. Don't put other people down in order to build yourself up.
To really rock your humor purchase The Humor Advantage. Or better still buy copies for all your friends, loved ones, and colleagues. (Okay, so the exhibit doesn't say that in so many words, but I sort of feel as though it's implied.)
