What Would Your Personal Calling Card Say?

Comedian Steve Martin hands out business cards to strangers he encounters that read:

"This certifies that you have had a personal encounter with me
and that you found me warm, polite, intelligent, and funny.
"

Steve Martin

What a fabulous way to build a great first impression and connect with people in a fun way! In fact, why not do this with your team as a fun exercise and have everyone write down what their personal calling card would say. Or better still, actually create the cards for networking events or to use when engaging with your clients.

Beyond the purely fun aspect of this, Steve Martin's calling card brings to mind a more serious point about how people perceive us and what we want our personal brand, or calling card, to say about ourselves. Most of us, after all, don't hand out cards telling people how we hope to be perceived, but everyone we interact with draws conclusions about us based on their first impressions, our body language, facial expressions, how present we are with them, how kind and empathetic we come across, and a host of other factors.

So, what would you like people to say about you after you've had an encounter with them? What adjectives or descriptors would you hope rise to the surface? And are you connecting and engaging with the people around you in such a way that is congruent with what you'd want your personal calling card to say?

    Mike's Fun at Work Tip

Create a funny "safe" word or phrase that meeting participants can use when they feel someone has violated one of your meeting rules or norms. Using a funny word or phrase helps keep it light so people don't feel as awkward calling someone out and it will help keep the overall tone of the meeting light.
