    Longing for More Belonging

A sense of belonging at work improves employees' sense of loyalty, happiness, and engagement. Conversely, when employees don't feel as though they belong, they are less resilient, less happy, and less likely to offer up new ideas. Studies even show that the impacts of feeling isolated at work can be similar to experiencing actual physical pain.

When participants pass a virtual ball to one another while in an MRI scanner, the scanners reveal that when people are purposely excluded from the game, the parts of their brains that are associated with physical pain show increased activation. Ouch!

Think of all the ways and those times you feel you belong on your team, or in your workplace, and those times where perhaps you felt like you didn't belong. A sense of belonging goes well beyond merely including people in events.

Does everyone on your team feel a genuine connection to the rest of the team? Do they feel recognized and heard? Do they feel they can be their authentic selves? (This is a big one: If you don't feel you can be yourself, then how can you truly feel as though you truly belong?)

Here's a worthwhile team discussion to have: What contributes to a sense of belonging in your workplace and what takes away from feeling a deep-seated sense of belonging?

The PR Director for the company Mindvalley is a dog. And by that I mean an actual four-legged canine. And no, it's not intended to be a statement on what they think of PR Directors, but simply a fun idea that has earned them a mention in several magazines (and without an actual, you know, human PR Director).

What fun position could you create for a company dog? You could turn this into a contest to get employees' children to submit possible names for the dog, include an honorary seat at your meetings for the dog, and feature a photo spread and bio on your website!
